The town of La Trinidad, Benguet celebrated its thriving strawberry industry during the annual La Trinidad Strawberry Festival. One of the most anticipated highlights of the celebration is the Search for the Sweetest and Heaviest Strawberry, held on March 13, 2026, at the municipal park.

The competition brought together 30 strawberry farmers from Pico and the Strawberry Farm area, each presenting their best harvest. The event aims to recognize the dedication of local farmers while showcasing the quality and uniqueness of strawberries grown in the municipality.

How Strawberry Sweetness is Measured

In the Sweetest Strawberry category, the sweetness of the fruit is measured using a refractometer from ATAGO, a trusted instrument widely used in agriculture and food quality testing.

The device measures sweetness using the Brix scale (°Bx), which indicates the percentage of sugar present in fruit juice. A higher Brix value means a sweeter fruit.

During the 2026 competition, the sweetest strawberry recorded 14.7° Brix, which is considered very sweet for strawberries.

Organizers also noted an interesting development this year. A red strawberry variety emerged as the sweetest entry, outperforming the snow-white strawberry variety, which has historically dominated the sweetness category in previous competitions.

The event continues to be one of the most exciting attractions of the La Trinidad Strawberry Festival, celebrating the hard work of Benguet farmers and promoting the region’s agricultural heritage.

With its cool mountain climate and fertile soil, La Trinidad, Benguet remains known as the Strawberry Capital of the Philippines, producing strawberries that are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

Events like the Search for the Sweetest and Heaviest Strawberry highlight the quality of locally grown produce and strengthen the reputation of Benguet as one of the country’s top strawberry-producing regions.
